Outdoor Concrete That Can Take a Texas Summer
Patio & Pool Deck Coatings face the harshest conditions of any floor we work on in Houston. A pool deck or open patio sits in full sun, gets soaked by pool water and storms, takes pool chemicals and has bare feet on it all summer. Plain concrete gets hot, cracks, stains and turns rough. Pool deck resurfacing and patio coating systems give that slab a new surface that is cooler, more slip-resistant and easier to keep clean. We pick the system for each space instead of using one product on everything.
Heat and sun come first
Bush Intercontinental hits 90F or more on an average of 106.5 days a year, according to Wikipedia's Houston climate figures. A deck in that sun can burn bare feet and break down coatings not made for UV. Standard indoor epoxy is the wrong choice outdoors. Epoxy gets just a poor to fair UV rating in the HomeGuide polyaspartic guide, which is why an epoxy deck can yellow and chalk. Outdoors, we use UV-stable systems such as polyaspartic topcoats, cementitious acrylic deck coatings and decorative overlays. On a pool deck, the right texture and color also matter for heat.
Cooler, non-slip decks
Kool Deck and similar textured acrylic coatings have been used on pool decks for a long time. According to HomeGuide, Kool Deck is non-slip and helps bring the surface temperature down. Lighter colors and a broken, knockdown texture both help. For a patio that is mainly for seating and grilling, a flake or solid polyaspartic system can look more finished while still giving grip. We will show you samples of each and explain the tradeoffs: how they feel under bare feet, how easy they are to clean and how they hold up.
Water, drainage and storms
Houston gets heavy rain and big storms; Hurricane Harvey dropped more than 50 inches on parts of the city in 2017. On a deck, the problem is less about flooding and more about where the water goes. Standing water on a coated surface is slippery and wears it out faster. We check slope and drains before coating, and we may recommend fixing low spots or cleaning out deck drains first. Expansion joints around the pool and against the house need flexible sealants, not rigid coating, so they can move without cracking.
Cracks from clay soil
Wikipedia describes Houston as sitting on low-permeability clay-silt prairie soils, and the area has more than 150 known surface faults. Shrink-swell clay moves outdoor slabs even more than garage slabs, because they get soaked and baked. That is why so many pool decks here have cracks running across them. We route out and fill cracks before resurfacing, and we use flexible crack fillers where movement is likely. We will also tell you plainly if a crack is likely to come back, because no coating can stop the ground under it from moving.
Pool chemicals and cleaning
Chlorine, salt-water systems and pool shock all end up on the deck. A good outdoor coating resists those chemicals, but no surface likes them sitting on it. Rinse the deck after adding chemicals and after big pool parties, and keep pool shock in its container. Most decks just need a regular hose rinse and an occasional scrub with a mild cleaner. Some acrylic deck coatings benefit from a fresh sealer over time, and HomeGuide lists sealing at $1 to $3 per square foot.
Patios, porches and outdoor kitchens
Not every outdoor slab is a pool deck. Covered patios, back porches and outdoor kitchens get less direct sun but still deal with heat, humidity, grease and rain. A polyaspartic flake system works well on covered patios, giving a finished look that is easy to wipe clean. For outdoor kitchens, we choose a topcoat that can handle grease and cleaning. Front walks and entries can be coated to match. We look at the whole outdoor space and suggest a system that ties it together.
When an old deck should be stripped first
Many Houston pool decks already have a coating, often an aging acrylic texture or a painted finish. If it is still well bonded, we can often clean, repair and recoat it, which keeps the cost down. If it is peeling, bubbling or flaking, the old layer has to come off. A new coating laid over a failing one will only last as long as the layer underneath. We test how well the old surface is holding during the estimate, and we explain in the quote whether we plan to recoat or strip. Stripping adds time and cost, but it is the only way to give the new deck a sound surface to bond to. Either way, the plan and the price are written down before we start, along with how many days the deck stays closed and when the pool area reopens.

Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
What coating works on a Houston pool deck?
It depends on the deck. Textured acrylic coatings like Kool Deck are slip-resistant and help keep the surface cooler, while decorative overlays and polyaspartic systems give more design choices. We recommend a system after seeing the deck.
Can you resurface a cracked pool deck?
Usually. We route and fill cracks and use flexible sealant at joints. Cracks caused by moving soil can come back, and we tell you if we expect that.
Is epoxy good for outdoor patios?
Standard epoxy yellows in sun, so it never goes on as our outdoor top layer. A polyaspartic topcoat or an outdoor-rated system suits the job better.
How hot does a coated pool deck get?
Light colors and textured cool-deck finishes stay cooler than dark, smooth surfaces. HomeGuide says Kool Deck helps lower surface temperature.
What does pool deck resurfacing cost?
Per HomeGuide, Kool Deck runs $4 to $6 per square foot, decorative overlays $6 to $12 and stamped overlays $7 to $20. Repairs and design change the total, and you get a written price once we have seen the deck.
